PROSERPINE   was named by explorer George Dalrymple, after Persephone the Greek goddess of fertility, recognising the fertile qualities in the region. Sugar Cane farming and Cattle farming have been the main way of life since the late 1800's
      The Proserpine Sugar Mill was sold to a Singapore-owned company, Sucrogen, for $120 million in 2011
